FORMER NFL PRO AND A PRO IN LIFE
    Interview by:
Donza Meagley

Kevin Dyson
, born in Logan Utah had no idea that he would play in the NFL and make history. It’s evident that this wide receiver has so much more to offer then memorable plays in franchise history. The play when Dyson was the recipient of Frank Wycheck’s disputed lateral known as The Music City Miracle made history. Another memorable play was at Super Bowl XXXIV on January 30, 2000 against The St.Louis Rams when Dyson was tackled by Mike Jones one yard short of scoring a touchdown to tie the game.

As a kid Dyson was tall and lanky. He had a body frame for a professional basketball player. Dyson was not muscular or big at all. So, initially he set his hopes and dreams towards hoops. His life took a turn down a different path when he went to Las Vegas to visit his dad. When he reconnected with a coach that knew he had skills and encouraged him to play some football. This particular coach had seen him grow since high school. Dyson showed up at a college practice and unbeknownst to him he surprised ever one with his plays and the rest is history.

Dyson played for the Tennessee Titans from 1998-2001, Carolina Panthers in 2003 and signed with Washington Redskins in 2005. Dyson has proven over and over again that he has fantastic sportsmanship and internal drive. This seems to run in the family. Dyson has an older brother by the name of Andre Dyson who plays for the New York Jets as a cornerback. This is incredible to have two brothers given the opportunity to play for the NFL. The oval ball between the two of them has amazing plays and history. I’m sure there were times when Dyson had felt the force of the ball and sweat baring moves that made history and surprised his family, fans, and players. This talented player has demonstrated his passion to continue with the sport as a coach at Franklin Road Academy High School in Nashville, Tennessee. Dyson coaches both football and basketball at the Academy. Dyson feels very blessed to have the sports opportunities that have crossed his path. This wide receiver standing over 6 feet tall finished his 6 NFL season with 124 receptions for 1,500 yards and 11 tremendous touchdowns in 59 games.

Kevin Dyson wants to give back to the world and communities. Starting his foundation called “Making Miracles” is something Dyson has a passion for. The name of his foundation came from some of his most memorable moments as an athlete. Dyson, wanted to reach out to at-risk and underprivileged youth that are in need of financial assistance due to circumstances beyond their control. The foundation will provide funding for youth sports organizations, youth church after school programs and various after school programs. The Making Miracles foundation will not just touch on various activities but also assisting families that are in need of good health care, battered and abused children, and drug abusing children. Foster care and adoptive programs will also be included as target groups that could get assistance from the foundation.

Dyson wants to provide children access to as many positive influenced, character building activities as possible. Dyson feels the need to give back. Children are our future and some statistics show children are less likely to be involved in criminal activities if they are actively involved in extracurricular activities. Dyson is one of a kind with such a humble attitude.

Center Stage: Dyson, you’ve been on some great teams. What are some differences or comparison between the Titans, Panthers, and the Washington Redskins?

Dyson: Every team I’ve been on showed talent and tools to make it to the Super Bowl. The Redskins had a lot of movers and shakers, The Tennessee Titans had the tools lots of new comers, and the Panthers had the right tools.

Center Stage: Did you always have an interest in Football?

Dyson: Yes but I always had an interest in basketball. You see I was a skinny little kid no muscles (laughter) It was a coach that encouraged me to play football.

Center Stage: Are you in graduate studies:

Dyson: Yes, I attend Traveca College majoring in Leadership and Administration.

Center Stage: What are your thoughts on the Music City Miracle play in 2000?

Dyson: I always said I would not put so much weight on it. However, I feel blessed and still feel I’m able to play. It seems my career stopped abruptly after that.

Center Stage: Yes, you are very fortunate player. Do you feel you’ll continue pursuing a football career?

Dyson: Yes who knows, I might even look into coaching, different minority coaching opportunities, player development, recruiting and even scouting. However I still feel like I have more playing time in the NFL.

Center Stage: What are some of your other aspirations?

Dyson: I always said I would give back to communities. Target group young men however I can relate to just about anybody.

Center Stage: How can people help with your foundation “Making Miracles” and what items can be donated?

Dyson: We can help by fund raising through various activities/events and donations for monies, clothes, equipment, academic utensils and other non-profit organization that provide assistance within our parameters.
