Unique Life Empowerment

The Young Adult's Guide to Cherishing EVERY Moment

Esteem Yourself!
By Deveata Williams

The famous comedian Katt Williams once said, "Women are always talking about men are taking away their self esteem. We can't take that away...it's called SELF esteem! Esteem of YOURSELF!" As young adults trying to establish ourselves in the world, this is a very important concept to meditate on. My first article concentrated on finding your identity and cultivating a uniqueness that no one else can duplicate. After painting a "mind picture" of who you are and what your talents are, I ask you...do you like the image? "Is your Identity in Check?"

Some people wait their entire lives for others to give them approval. They beat themselves up over every tiny mistake and are overly cautious to the point that they don't take productive risks that could possibly move them forward. Instead of living a life searching for recognition and praise, why not get the ball rolling and start with yourself? If you've worked hard on a project at school or work, treat yourself to a night out or a new outfit! If you've done something that makes you particularly proud of your efforts, pat yourself on the back and keep moving in that positive direction! It might sound a little strange, but it's those moments of self recognition that builds an attitude that influences and encourages others to improve in their lives as well.

As an entertainer, I am a firm believer in doing your best performance for the show. You only get one shot so you need to prepare and concentrate on all the details to get it right. The reward that comes from this is people smiling, clapping, and enjoying your talent enough to tell someone else about it. Even with the reward in sight, you have to remember that pleasing everyone is absolutely impossible. Even if we think we are the coolest person on the planet, there's always going to be someone waiting backstage or in the audience to tell you the ONE thing you could have done better. If we rely on our ?haters? to evaluate our actions, disappointment will definitely be the outcome.

We can't always look to others to provide our SELF esteem. Confidence and self worth must begin internally. Once that foundation is made up in our minds and built up within ourselves, only then can we expect others to take notice and give us the accolades and recognition we already know we deserve!
